Forgot - all amenities mentioned point to either public or private campgrounds - no other options obviously. State and national forests are all rustic, so that leaves state parks, county parks, recreation areas like Waterloo, Brighton, etc, (not sure about hot showers at those campgrounds), and independent campgrounds. This narrows things down.
I am familiar with west Michigan camping - not so much the east. I know you are probably already familiar with parks like these, but newbies may not be.
County parks are especially good options for amenities, price, and interesting locales. Places like Cold Brook Park and others (too many to list but similar parks are under each county's jurisdiction):
Cold Brook Park, Parks Department, Kalamazoo Michigan County Government Website
Google Maps

Newaygo County Parks - Camp Swampy Campground
Destination Oakland - Oakland County, Michigan
Destination Oakland - Oakland County, Michigan
Campground Information - Oscoda County Park

Private camps usually have all the "convenience" facilities:
Michigan Campgrounds | Bring the Family for Some Camping in Michigan | Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts
Campgrounds in Michigan | Private Campgrounds

An aside - googling "best" campgrounds, notice how many are far from SE Michigan.

If you want to stay nearer to metro Detroit for drive time reasons, then check out Island Lake State Park. They have a group camping area and there are trails, two small lake front beaches, and the Huron River.

This one in Romeo is pretty neat - it's not going to have Lake Michigan access like some of the others - but for kids - a lake, basketball, volleyball, and fields for ultimate frisbee is enough. Given it's in Romeo - it's only about an hour north of Detroit. The last week of July and the first week of August are Family camp where everyone is invited. It doesn't have "camping" from a rustic perspective, but even if you decide to go elsewhere, I'd take your kids there in late July/Aug. Seeing as you like the Henry Ford type places - this would fit in perfectly. About | Simpson Park

This is a pretty good website that links to most of the major camps in Michigan with their address/websites etc.
