That is omething the ACLU has been fighting with us for a long time, and no kids are allowed on the strip after dark unless with an adult.Bottom line to this whole thing is,if Michigan got it's head out of it's ass and interested outside investors and began construction on some stuff,it would prosper,oh,damn, that takes visionaries, and as long as they are all out here, michigan will not be in that league, ever. Can't sit on your thumbs forever, can you?

I am not a Physicist, Biochemist or a Physician either but we did get a full blown relocation package. It's out there people, you just have to look outside of the box. I can't say that we don't miss some things from up north but what I don't miss is not being able to find work to keep my house.
I have a friend of mine who is working down here with me and the rest of the family is back in Mich. We need to do whatever it takes to survive.
Housing is not bad down here in Derby, Ks. People are nicer and I have not had to turn on my furnace yet 11/02/07!!!!!

My husband and I are looking to move out of MI within the next two to three years. We were both in the Mortgage industry and have had to seek other career opportunities due to the MI economy. I have even gone back to school.

I have two stepchildren-my stepson is headed to college next year and my stepdaughter (who lives with her Mom) just started high school.

We would love to move sooner but most of our family is here and to allow my stepdaughter to get acclimated to high school and a few years older, we will wait. I would have liked for her to move with us to TX (but that's another story .

We are looking to move to the Houston area. I recently visited Houston after researching both the job and housing market and found both to be much more stable than here.

We are trying to get out of Michigan fast! I like it here, we live in a very nice area, Canton to be exact. I could have seen our family staying here for the rest of our lives, although we all hate winter. My husband lost his job in June due to the company downsizing, he was with the company 16 years, and he can't seem to find another one. He's getting called for an interview here and there, but companies are intervewing a lot of people just for one job, so that makes things a little more difficult. There are a lot of people unemployed here at the moment. So we have started looking for employment in other states. We just can't continue to live this way. We've exhausted our savings, we didn't think it would take this long to find employment. We need to get out fast!

I am on this site specifically because I am focused on finally moving out of Michigan. I moved here 7 years ago out of pure desperation (relationship ended and I literally was in a place where I had no where to go and friends gave me a fresh start). I lived in Ann Arbor for the first 2 years and have lived in Southfield ever since. I made the mistake of buying a house in Southfield, and now have lost all my equity and can't sell. So, even though I have NO interest in being an absentee landlord, that is what I will do if I can't sell for what I need.
I am single and am used to not having any problem dating, meeting new friends wherever I have lived and basically having a normal social life. That hasn't been the case here. I have made few friends that I actually think will stay in touch with me much once I leave. The only real friend I will be leaving is the one who gave me shelter originally.
I find this area to be lacking mainly because of the locals. The people here are primarily blue collar (nothing wrong with that, I come from blue collar people) who haven't been anywhere or done much other than watch Red Wings games, gamble or go to Florida or Las Vegas. I need to be around more sophisticated people. I know this makes me sound like a snob, and trust me, I know I am not any better than anyone else. I just know I don't fit in here. I am excited to try new things, check out new places, don't let Big Bad Scary Detroit stop me from going to places like Baker's Keyboard Lounge (one of the saving graces here) by myself. I am viewed as a crazy risk taker. The only people who I would slightly connect with are much younger than me, and I know that in other cities there are "cool" people my age. Just not here, or if they are, they are married with kids in their own world, which is one I don't live in. I need to move to a vibrant area with people like me who are my age, not married (although hoping to be one of these days soon! - that's another topic altogether) and fun. It's just not fun here.
Now, to brass tacks:
1. Michigan is affordable to buy a house, that is one of the few things it has going for it. But why? Because property values go down here, not up. I am in the business and I know that you can buy a house for not a lot of money but don't expect it to be an investment until many many years. That doesn't work for me.
2. The weather is not so bad, I have lived in worse weather conditions - Vermont and Maine have TERRIBLE winters. 30 below temps - not wind chills. It's just so gray here, that is what bugs me. Its depressing. So, in my search, I am actually looking at days of sunshine my new home will have. It doesn't have to be sunny 300 days a year, some cloudy days are fine, I like the seasons and some gray goes along with that, but not as much as we have to endure.
3. I have not experienced crime issues here. But I don't live in the Hood or Ghetto or whatever you want to call it. Although, I have had people actually nervous coming to see me (one redneck guy I "dated" for a brief time actually came with a loaded gun! I had to laugh. How silly! Needless to say, that was not the guy for me!). Southfield is a diverse community, middle class, lower class and a mix of ethnicities and religions and ages. Not dangerous to me.
The economy of course is the biggest issue and along with that the drop in property values. Our decline will continue for a while I think and any increases will be small and take a long time.
So, those are some of my thoughts. In general, I want to move to a vibrant city, one where life is going on in a positive way and that is NOT Detroit. I live in a suburb and I am not a suburb kinda girl. So, time to move on. Now, the question is - where?!

I have to look for work close to Michigan and with Kentucky it's only 8.5 to 9 hour drive and they have a Planned Investment in Louisville of 2.1 BILLION DOLLARS not like Michigan with the Governors planned 30 Million Dollar River Front Project Her and Kwamee gonna turn things around.
The other day I said there was going to be jobs cut at Chrysler of 1,200 Boy was I off on that number ended up being 12,000 plus all the Temporary jobs, and also some small suppliers, and they cut 4 Models out. So this is going to put a bigger hurt on the economy, and Megallen you say other States like Nevada are hurting more then Michigan? I think you must be a State worker who depends on the State of Michigan for your pay check, or you have your head stuck in the ground. I love this State but the people who back this State Goverment are lost and very confused at the least. Michigan needs to make the TAXES LOWER if they want Companies to come here, Even if Michigan was to build 100 Casino's no body wants to spend time in a State that is Cold and Wet during the winter months, People like the Sun and Warm temperatures so Michigan can't compete with Vegas, But with all the jobs being cut every day anymore one has to wonder what should they be doing to help themselfs from lossing every thing they own. I myself am planning on working out of State so I don't end up on the Foreclosure list like so many other Michigan Families. I have two little girls to take care of or I could let them go back to their mother and they can live in a Hotel down on McNichlos in Detroit and turn out just like their mother a HO! and that aint HomeOwner. I will do what I need to do to give these girls a stable home to grow up in, and If we have to move to another State that's what we will do. A Friend of mine is now traveling to places like Virgina, New Jersey, Washington DC. for work as a Carpenter cause these States have Construction going on. So I guess the ones who are concerned with making ends meet will do what they know down deep they have to do, Cause I hate to tell you Michigan just isn't cuttin it for some of us. The people in Michigan Goverment don't give a Damn about it's Residents. cause if they did the State wouldn't be in the state it's in. We wouldn't have lost 400,000 jobs since GrandHole took Office. I know if was President Bush's Fault we lost all the companies to China. More like Bush 1 and Clinton who lost the jobs with their Free Trade BS. But that's water under the bridge at this point. At leat if I can work in Kentucky and keep my house here I will still be paying my Taxes to Michigan so my little bit will help. I know people who have lost their homes and move to a trailer park cause they can't pay their bills in the house. Michigan needs to cut the budget more and lower State worker's wages and cut the State Reps and Senators Pay, cut the Governors pay to around $45,000 a year and then I'll say they have made large steps in getting Michigan back on it's feet, intil then it's the same ole' same ole' in Lansing

What a bunch of crap. How about the people who don't want to deal blackjack or sell homes? How's the job market out there?

Well, lets see..... I don't do either and I have had my pick of jobs in my field which is teaching.... I dare you to find a teaching job in MI, also, my hubby is a firefighter and makes over 100K a year. Find me a department in MI that pays anywhere close to that.

Magellan you have been in the depressing state of MI so long that you don't even realize how down you are until you leave. My husband and I both were long time residents of MI (30+ yrs.) and we still have family there, but I can't describe what you are missing because you won't get it until you leave. There is a sense of desperation in the atmosphere there that just doesn't exist out here. Families go on vacations, spend money on silly things and aren't counting every penny wondering how they are going to stay warm this winter.

We have played host to 2 families that we were friends with in MI while they came out here to look for jobs and guess what??? Both families found jobs within the week they were here that paid 10-15K MORE than they were making in MI. And NO the COL is not higher out here. In fact, we are all from Livingston County Area and most things are actually LESS out here.

I won't dispute the beauty of MI, especially Northern MI, but Nevada is also beautiful and we can pay our bills and have money left for fun.... I lost my teaching job in MI and spent a year trying to find a new one while we scraped by on my husbands meager salary as a firefighter until enough was enough. The people out here appreciate teachers....they will be short 4-5000 next fall, as well as their police and firefighters who risk their lives for the residents of this great city. In MI we had nothing but pay cuts and loss of benefits and a whole lot of "lip service" about how appreciated we were. It didn't matter whether or not we could feed our families, a nice warm pat on the back was supposed to be enough.

These are all things that are heard from people when they come out here, they are astounded at what they can have and obtain in a minimal amount of time. The difference between nevada and michigan is that they are willing to pay for top notch help, period. When you pay people good money, you get the best in production,as well as other faucets in work. There are quite a few of us from Michigan out here, and like most,we miss being back home, but not willing to starve. Some people figure out sooner than others that ideologies and blind beliefs won't feed your family or pay the bills.A 30 million dollar project might sound significant to some, but out here, most contractors wouldn't bid it for one reason...it's to small, not worth the time.As for my family and myself, the only problem with going back to Michigan is the contractor's can't afford me,it would waste my time dealing with prehistoric program's they have implemented,no wonder they have so many issues, anyway, whatever you decide is hopefully in the best interest of your family.God bless and good luck.

I personally would avoid Vegas and Nevada in general only BECAUSE of the Casino crap. I have no problem with native Americans trying to make money from the rest of us (afterall, white people stole all their friggin' land) but I personally hate gambling and all the drugs and prostitution and crime that goes along with it.

I seriously hope Casinos stay few and far between in Michigan because regardless of how much work or money they generate, I would hate to be someone living near one (or worse, having kids being raised in that environment).

Vegas should not be anyone's goal unless they have no other choice.
