hi - do you know of a hotel that is under $100 a night, that has a pillow-top bed or a softer bed than the usual extra firm hotel bed? Somewhere in western Michigan along Lake Michigan - in the Holland to Ludington area, (Route 31 route). I slept on a too firm mattress and got a knot in my back. That would be wonderful to have a softer bed.

Oh boy, i might have to come up with some alternative. so far no one knows of any place. Well i tried!

Does any one have any suggestions on what to do with a too hard (way too hard) hotel mattress to make it not hurt my back? thank you I'm still coming to vacation there, but wish there were an affordable rate.

If you're a Sam's Club member they used to sell latex mattress pads to put on top a mattress. I like a hard mattress myself but slept on one of these for awhile. I finally had to take it off because of back aches due to a too soft mattress. Other places probably sell them besides Sam's so I would check around.

The Sam's Club pads are on the heavy side for traveling purposes. I would think many other stores would carry various versions of these pads. There must be a company that makes something suitable for travel comfort that is easy to take in and out of motels.

OK, they're calling them "mattress toppers", portable or otherwise, and there's a bunch of different thicknesses and designs on the internet.
Costco has a 3" one which can probably be rolled.
