Today I found out that the Michigan Senate introduced bills to repeal the state ban on same sex marriage recognition as well as support the repeal for DOMA. I'm very excited as I married my wife in New York as soon as it passed, but I would love to not have to move out of state to have our relationship recognized. I know that there won't be a lot of happy people about this, but what are your feelings on this? Do you think it is possible that the bills could pass? Or is Michigan not ready for this? The last poll that they conducted on this subject had a 56% approval rating which is 10% higher than the same poll last year, which makes me think that it's possible...

Was this a state poll?

As for it passing? There does seem to be a number of ultra social conservatives in the house which i think poses a problem. Hopefully i am wrong ( thus i hope it passes ) but yeah you know how that goes. I don't see Snyder vetoing it if it should reach his desk.

I still don't get the problem some people have with same sex marriage. What is the issue I'm missing?

I really do not care whether the 19 same sex couples in Michigan who want to get married do or do not. It is a stupid tiny issue that we waste far too much time on. This state has issues that actually matter. S

The poll was given to a group of Michigan voters, and it was at 56% support this year. I know of the problem with the ultra conservatives and the Republicans having control of the state senate as well, but I am really hoping that we might be able to make this happen. The poll shows that there was also quite a bit of growth in support from the Republican base and more conservative voters as well, which makes me somewhat optimistic. They haven't presented the bills to the floor yet, but are planning to next week. Here is a link with a little more information on it, so you have a source.

I'm not so sure what Snyder's reaction to it would be.. He doesn't seem to like dealing with things that don't have to do with farming, tasers, or forestry.. There is a quote from him at the bottom of this Free Press article that I don't particularly care for.. Especially since these bills have everything to do with jobs and children.

How can you think a bill for same sex marriage has "everything to do with jobs and children?" The bills have nothing to do with either, they DO deal with couples of the same sex being able to be married legally in the State... period, end of story.

If Snyder doesn't really care about the issue, then he should just not be an obstructionist. And it does have to do with jobs and kids, particularly when it comes to estate planning, healthcare, adoption laws, end-of-life issues, taxation and a slew of other benefits that go along with state-sanctioned marriage. Will in create jobs? No. But there's more to life than creating jobs. Does Snyder want his legacy/epitath when he dies to be: "He created 10,000 middle wage jobs for the State of Michigan (including several emergency manager jobs)"

I've come to realize that most straight married couples don't even understand the contract that they have entered into. You certainly understand it a great deal more when you try to break that contract in court.

As a straight, white male between the ages of 18-49, this concerns me.
