Do you like winter? Big plus for Michigan.

I think you will get very few people who live in Michigan telling you that you should move to Tennessee I moved to Indiana and miss Michigan a lot. The lakes and rivers here are nothing like back home. I tried to get a job in TC but they didn't hire me, but I wish I was there instead of here. I've never been to Tennessee but my brother lives there and likes it a lot. I guess it comes down to what you like. TC has a lot to offer IMO. Love all the water, so much to do that is close and if you like winter the snow there is pretty awesome most years. If you hate cold and winter, then it's not for you. I think summer time is perfect up in that area. I love cool nights and hot days. Perfect.

I would say your feelings about winter should be a big factor in your decision. I don't like winter at all but would still pick Michigan over Tenn. The weather we're having right now is wonderful. Nothing beats a Michigan summer.

Wow...talk about totally different places (even picking between Nashville and Knoxville would be totally different)

I live in Nashville and have since 1994. I was born in Detroit and grew up in suburbs of Detroit...but we always had a cabin in Grayling. Traverse City is a beautiful area. Besides the weather differences....Nashville and Knoxville are bigger...especially Nashville. Do you like bigger city amenities? Do they mean much to you? Or, do you prefer peaceful surroundings? It's so hard to even compare the areas....I think you would just need to decide what's most important to you on a day to day basis. I've always lived in city areas....except for a 5 year stint where my partner and I bought a house on 5 acres in the country. It was beautiful....and I was bored to death. I discovered that I like having everything close by and I like to visit the country.

Anyway...maybe make a list of what's important to you. Since you've been to all of these areas it will help you decide what's most important.

Good Luck with your move

Just to add a note about Traverse City. It's not the small town it was several decades ago. Anyone who knew it growing up or in years past would be surprised to see it today. It's a nice mid-size city now, and it has virtually everything that most cities of any size will have in regards to shopping. I'll go as far as to say it offers even more than many other notable cities I've visited. This is wine country in northern Michigan. The vineyards are close by, and this is all in a beautiful setting. Local food is getting nation wide recognition now too.

I guess my post kind of sounded like I was calling it small...I didn't really mean it quite like that. But, there would be a noticeable difference between a city of 1.6 million and one of 15 thousand. I would think the OP probably has things that are most important to her. She would just need to decide what those are.

High insurance costs, poorly maintained roads, constant gridlocked freeways because of construction.

Not sure if you made your decision yet but I will tell you my experience being that I lived in MI all my life (with family in the U.P. all the way to Detroit) and now I am in TN. I hated winter not the snow but the cold. But again, the state is so beautiful especially up north. I have been in TN now for just over a year. I will tell you that I LOVE it! I am very happy to have made the move. With this said there are tons of Michiganders here. We are so central to so what I say everything. Always something to do. Few hours of fun, Day trips, weekend getaways, or a real vacation are not to far away. I live south of Nashville near Spring HIll, TN. I miss family and friends but I have no regrets moving here. We will get a winter but much milder than MI or IL. Just Love It!

I'm moving from Detroit to Knoxville TN. In about 100 days. It's going to feel good to make this much needed move. This is something both me and my daughter's really need. Only thing is I'll be down there also gaining or getting my education. So I'm really ready! Nashville is so filled with life. VS. Detroit.
