Are you referring to the new scorecard system? VERY confusing.

MDE - Michigan School Scorecards

Some of the PDFs on there give an overview. Basically they are using multiple factors such as test score improvement of minority students and factoring it into the color code system. But they are still reporting out on the overall percentile of the schools which is what I think most parents still go by anyway.

Just another version of the M & M color game. Even great schools like Birmingham and West Bloomfield only scored YELLOW. We are one more step closer to PRIVITIZATION and education for the HAVES and no education for the HAVE NOTS.

Great Schools suddenly become mediocre

Birmingham schools are only OK?

How do you figure? Per-pupil spending is higher in Detroit than any other district in Michigan.

Per-pupal spending doesn't mean a great school or a poor school. It is more indicative of how taxed the population in that district is, not the quality of education in the district.

Agree 100% with Z-man28. Just another shill game that is meaningless.

I totally agree that per-pupil spending does not correlate with improved student outcomes. Many, many studies have illustrated this. So what's the answer? I would say it has a lot more to do with the parents than it does the school district. If you have a single parent, high school dropout at home that's going to have a lot more influence on whether Junior succeeds than what school he attends. Or to put it another way, culture matters.

^ - That's the easy answer (and I agree with it completely).

But when select cultures deem it acceptable to encourage single parent homes, what remedy is there for the children of said parents? We can't ingore the reality of most inner ring school districts.

Spending isn't the answer, abandonment can't be the answer.
