This is all pretty entertaining or a few minutes, but then again, they're just lists and personal comments, which is fine,so I guess I'll throw in my 2 cents' worth. I grew up in the Grand Rapids area,so it's definitely home to me.Left and relocated to the Sarasota Florida area in the late 80's and have ALWAYS missed my city. Yeah, yeah,I know, beaches, warm weather all year long...Big deal......Maybe for tourists, but trust me,living here isn't all it's cracked up to be,and I'm so done with it. I keep in touch with people who still live in the GR area and other parts of Michigan, and I know what's going on.Grand Rapids made it through the fall of the economy and is brilliantly revitalizing itself as a top notch education center, which in my book,is definitely not a bad thing. It also has a lot more to offer its' residents than when I left, also a good thing. I'm damn proud to say I'm from Grand Rapids, through bad times or good times, and I'm moving back home after the new year, and I can't wait to get back to my city. It was never a bad place to live in while I was growing up and as a young adult, and I certainly don't see it as a bad place to live in in the future.(And yes,I have a job with a national company that allows transfers, although I'm seriously considering retiring after I get there.)

I know of so many that have left Michigan to retire in the sunny mid-south....and Florida that have uprooted them selves once more , some going home to die , some growing tired of living isolated for so long with politics and regional ways that they long for some sanity.....they move back north.

I traveled through Kentucky a couple of times this year. And I learned that we really have no business adding "tucky" to the names of our towns here in Michigan. There just aren't that many similarities.

It is more about the people rather then the location.

A lot of the "tuckeys" were awarded the name because many of the people who lived there, mainly came from the region (the south, not just Kentucky) looking for work at the auto plants and they brought some of the traits associated (sometimes wrongly) to the area. Those that moved to the city were not noticed as much, but those that moved to the unincorporated areas (like Taylor), acted like they never left the south. Later on, those that ran from the city, moved into nearby areas that later took on the name (Hazel Park).

Anyway, right or wrong, that is my opinion on the topic.

As someone who has been to Kentucky many times myself, I agree. Kentucky Hillbillies have nothing on the backwardness of some of our Michigan Hillbillies.

Mine:

1. Kalamazoo (has its shortcomings, but overall, its a great city)
2. Jones (a speck of a village in eastern Cass county, but my best Michigan memories reside there)
3. Marquette (I've lived in the UP for the past 5 years, and if I was to stay, the Marquette - negaunee area would EASILY be the place for me.....unfortunately munising has ruined living in the UP for me at the moment)
4. Ann arbor (because, despite its uber-liberal politics, its a great place with excellent shopping/dining/medical facilities)
5. Paw paw (I've always liked this town, small, rural, but still in easy driving distance of shopping, ect)
6. Monroe (I generally hate southeast Michigan, but monroe is very nice.....I like the marshy lake Erie shoreline and its abundance of wildlife thats nearby)
7. Volinia-russ forest (hidden gem in southwest michigan. Home to the historic Newton mansion built in 1844 (and which I lived in in 1999) and beautiful Russ forest, the oldest (and perhaps only) old growth forest in southern Michigan)
8. Escanaba ( along with marquette, one of the most livable places in the UP....milder winters than the rest of the UP too......take it from me, the UP is a dicey place to live, do your homework before you buy anything.....a nice view won't outweigh all the negatives you never even thought about before you settled down here)
9. Traverse city ( very nice city, lots to do, beautiful scenery, great food, bit expensive though)
10. Saugatuck (I've been here countless times and never a bad expirence..... Climbing mt baldhead will take it out of you though...)

Could you expand on that or suggest reading?
