Hi all,

I will be a new grad in May and have been hired to work for GM at their Warren facility starting in June.

I will be relocating from Chicago and looking to find a place to live. I want to rent a house for the first year before I start to look at places to buy. No kids, just 2 dogs so I don't care about how good the elementary schools are. I've looked at a lot of other threads on here but they're either old or are for older people relocating. I want to live near somewhere I can go out to bars/cafes/a gym, etc. Not necessarily in a downtown area because I would like to have a yard for the dogs but close enough to go into for the weekend and to meet new people.

Thanks!

Anywhere between Van Dyke and Woodward north of 696 will be fine. The area by 14 Mile/Mound is pretty nice - there's a nice LA Fitness there, Meijer/shops and it's only a 10 minute drive to Royal Oak.

If you want to be closer to the young professionals, Royal Oak/Berkley/Clawson/Troy will be teaming with them - but all those areas are good - you won't be anymore than 15 minutes from the action. There's a "Signature" LA Fitness in Royal Oak at Woodward/696 and a normal one on Big Beaver.

Grosse Pointe Woods etc is another option to consider if you want more of the Naperville vibe/cafes/restaurants and boating/running along the lake. Brand new LA Fitness at Moross (Seven Mile)/Mack. Only a 15 minute commute to work.

Kudos on the new gig!

I live less than a mile from the Tech Center in Warren. There are many rental houses in the area. A 1000 square foot, 3 bedroom, 1950s era ranch on a 60x100 foot lot will run about $1000 per month to rent. Warren is typical suburbia. You will find plenty of good bars and restaurants, but not in a walkable area. You will pay much more to be in the trendy areas around Royal Oak. Personally I avoid Royal Oak because paying $6 for a Bud Light to be in a trendy bar is stupid to me. I prefer to do my bar hopping in Hamtramck ($1 PBRs) or downtown Detroit. Of course I'm mid 40s, so priorities change.

North Warren and Sterling Heights are a good base location. You are 5 minutes from work and 20 minutes from anywhere in Detroit or the northern suburbs.
