My husband and I are considering relocating to his Michigan office from dc. We will be in the area in June and wanted to explore some different areas while we are there to get a feel for how we would like it. We have two young kids. Here is what we are looking for:

Must-haves:
- within 30 minute commute to Southfield
- safe community

We would ideally like somewhere that has a community feel, but also has a little downtown area. Also lots of things to do with the kids would be great. School systems doesn't matter because our kids are young and we could move to a better school system once we get a feel for the areas we love. Also we love areas that have a little character and not just strip malls

Plymouth or Northville sound perfect for you.

Plymouth MI - Official Website

Plymouth Rocks! - Plymouth Michigan - Presented by the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce - Great things to do in Plymouth Michigan - President, G. Wesley Graff

Welcome to Downtown Northville!

The Official Website of the City of Northville, Michigan (MI)

They are both safe, family friendly, outer ring suburbs on the extreme western edge of the Detroit Metro with quaint downtown areas.

Farmington and Farmington Hills would be excellent! Even closer to work for your husband. You would love the programs for young children; I especially recommend the preschools, since your kiddies are young. Our family moved here from out of state as well, and we love the downtown Farmington area for restaurants, movie theater, farmers market on Saturdays, and walk-ability. Crime rate is very low here, too. Heritage Park is very large and gorgeous, with play areas and splash park.
It's truly beautiful out here; the hills aren't just in the name! The natural beauty, friendly neighbors and all the trees always make me happy.

See above, F & FH is the answer. Southfield, no. Plymouth is also beautiful but definitely way more of a commute.

Rochester Hills is really nice, nice downtown in Rochester (which is literally right next to it), but it might be a bit of a hike. I've gotten to Southfield in 30 from RH, but I was up pretty early and didn't have to deal with traffic

Farmington Hills is nice and safe

Novi is fine

Pleasant Ridge is a really nice little city, not much commercial activity but right next to Ferndale & Royal Oak where there's so much to do. Also very close to Southfield.
