Hi Everyone,

I recently moved to CO for work and am having a car transported from my home in Michigan to Colorado. But the car is titled under my father's name. Does anyone have any idea how I will be able to transfer the title, so I can register and get license plates for the car in CO? The car is currently still in MI, and I am in CO.

Thanks,

On the back of the title he should be able to sign it over to you (just like he sold it to you). In Michigan there are no sales taxes paid between family members even if you paid for the car.

You ought to be able to take that signed over title and get a new one in Colorado. You may want to keep it registered in Michigan for a while because Colorado is expensive

Not always, and you need to check the CO state laws prior to making this assumption. There are some states that require you to complete the transfer in the current state so that it is fully titled in your name AND THEN you can transfer the title to the new state (and yes, that is double the title fee in expense).

There won't be getting around any of this. Either the titled gets signed over to you by your father and then legally transferred, or you don't get CO plates on it and you drive it in CO with MI plates under your dad's name until that time comes.
