Hi Everyone,
I might move to Detroit area next Sept. for a job. It'll be in the Town center. I've been hearing all this news about safety issues in the Detroit area and I really don't know much about the city. I'm looking for a good/safe apt complex nearby and I can pay 1000$ monthly maybe a bit more. Any recommendations?

Thanks!
Sam

Safety issues are overblown. Most of the crime is limited to the inner-city and most of the suburbs are fine. You can fine a lot of good apartments in that price range, it just depends on how long you want your commute.

Village Green on Franklin is prob the best bet for the money. You'll get all the amenities, pool, fitness center etc and are only 5-10 minutes from work. Rent for a 1BR is only around $800

Congrats on the new gig!

PS - If you are looking next September (i.e. 13 months from now) - there's no point in even looking now. Easiest way to get an apartment is 1-2 weeks before move in, anything else, people are skeptical of you. Stay at an "Extended Stay" type hotel for a couple weeks or come out for a weekend 3-4 weeks before planning to move to find an apartment - so you don't move twice.

Thank you guys. I'm moving in this September. I'm good with up to 20 minutes commute to work. I guess I'll shoot for some complex in Bloomfield or Royal Oaks. Hopefully I can find something good with my price range.

Southfield isn't bad, with that price range you can find some decent complexes. I would look anywhere from Farmington Hills to Royal Oak and all the bedroom communities in between.

Crime won't be a concern unless you were looking in the city proper, in that case it vary's and you have to do a little more research in the immediate area. Other than that and a couple of the suburbs which are exceptions to the rule, crime is average to nearly non existent.

Thanks for that link on those apartments. I've been trying to move back to the area as soon as I find another job.
