My son will be attending a Michigan college this Fall. He has been accepted to MTU, Central & Kettering (waiting on a few others)

Can anyone give firsthand info on what "campus life" is like at any of these? Also U of M.

I think MTU would be his first choice if not for the male>female ratio and distance from our home (Clinton County area). He wants to focus on studies but still enjoy his time there as well. Any info appreciated!

MTU is supposed to be fun, I have a niece there (she is from Hawaii and loves it) We have a house a few miles away. We spend summer and Christmases up there.

What does he want to study? MTU has excellent engineering programs, but the rest are fairly sub-par.

I was a grad student and TA at MTU, not an undergrad, but I think I can safely say that the undergrads there work awfully hard compared to other places at which I have studied or taught. There are more than enough activities to occupy the limited free time that MTU students have. The students have to do a lot of work in teams or small groups, so there are opportunities to get to know other students that don't involve drinking/drugs (which is not to say that students drink much less here). Those who enjoy outdoor activities will probably enjoy MTU, as one would expect, but there are also a surprisingly large number of musical and theatrical activities for a school with no majors in those areas (band, orchestra, choirs, etc. ... there were student productions of Guys and Dolls, Cabaret, and a Shakespeare play when I was there). Winter Carnival or whatever they call it will help keep students from getting cabin fever in the middle of winter. There's even a drag show.

The male/female ratio is a problem, though, no two ways about it. And for gay males, as one gay colleague put it, "the odds are good, but the goods are odd."
