A buddy of mine from TN married a girl from lower MI and they like to vacation on Mackinac Island. I'm thinking of taking a vacation to the UP in late May/early June, and it's also close enough where I can get up there on a three/four day weekend.

What are the best beaches for swimming and hiking areas in late spring/summer up there?

The Marquette area has great beaches, but they are scattered all along Lake Superior. The best ones are the ones you need to hike a bit, and the beauty of the beaches are unmatched anywhere. I don't think you will be swimming in Lake Superior in Late May or early June though...lol It stays cold year round if we have a cold Winter, and that is shaping up to be the case again, but don't let that keep you away! Hiking can be found everywhere, but I think the best places are in the Western part where you can hike to the hundreds of waterfalls. Try the trails around Tahquamenon Falls also, as it is incredible up that way. Some of the best hiking in the U.P. can be found in the Porcupine Mountains. We have a book that tells how to get to each waterfall, so that is how we do most of our hiking. Some are easy, and some can be very tough...but they are all worth it!

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has some really nice hiking trails, and Tahquamenon falls state park has some nice hiking trails too.

So many beaches! The beaches in Marquette & Au Train area are simply unmatched. But I agree that swimming in late spring--probably not going to happen this year, although if we get a quick, hot change in weather you never know. Lake Michigan is warmer, but if we have a really cold winter, that may still be an issue on that lake. Hiking is awesome is in so many places--I'd decide where I want to go and explore from there. Pictured Rocks, Marquette area, the Keweenaw, St. Ignace--there are so many places! It's going to depend on what you're looking for, distance-wise, amenities, etc.

I did see some winter surfers on Lake Superior last week. But unless you have a very good wetsuit or are a polar bear, swimming will be a bit chilly.

i often go hiking at the Pictured Rocks NL, usually quiet and beautiful. Stop by the visitors center in Munising for trail maps.
