Nice idea, bad name. I guess the committee thought something more descriptive like Michigan State Trail, Great Lakes State Trail, Spectacular Peninsulas Trail or Pure Michigan Trail would have been too strange..

I think this has the potential to be incredibly cool. I can't wait to see how the process goes and how quickly it actually gets accomplished. Here's to hoping!

OK, I am confused. The trail is actually two separate trails, one for hiking and one for bicycling. The trail is said to follow the existing North Country National Scenic Trail, but other than the stretch across the Mackinaw Bridge the two trails share no common route.

Additionally, how do you fit a 1,259 mile hiking trail within Michigan? Our state is not that large.

It looks like the IB hiking trail connects with the North Country Trail in Albion east of Battle Creek and follows it all the way to Ironwood.

The bikepath seems to go along US-2 in the UP. Not sure how much fun it is going to be on your bicycle along that busy road where most drivers are in a hurry.

Iron Belle sounds like a name for a microbrew. Much like my own state's Long Trail Ale.

Kind of a goofy name, but I'd prefer it to a nondescript name, like Massachusetts' unimaginative Mid-State Trail.
