Woodland Lakes is fine and actually fairly new in build. I have a good friend that had an apartment there when they first were built, and it was nice. There are no known issues or problems, it is a fairly quiet area. Your Husky will love the winters here.

The south lansing meijer is a brand new build as of this past fall.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. In my mind I was still thinking of the old dumpy Meijer. I'm sure the new one is much better.

The south suburbs have quite a bit of commercial but also border the rougher/uglier side of Lansing. That being said, there are still nice areas on the south side of town. Good portions of Holt (Delhi township) are nice and safe. Mason is a great town. It's just the south edge of Lansing proper that is a problem, and some of that bleeds over into Holt as well. It's pretty easy to figure out when you are exploring the area, though.
Good to know. I know more of the pet friendly apartments seem to be on the outer rim of the South side. I think living somewhere like Woodland Lakes is best for the commute to Jackson... Ideally I wouldn't really want it any longer which is why I would like to avoid Ann Arbor despite its more district friendly location (higher cost too). I wish Lansing had a trader joes... Maybe one day Haha.

That's good to know, thanks!!! It definitely looks like a cozy area. I wish it was more convenient to get on or off either Highway, but you do what you have to do.

Also good to know about that meijer. The reviews I was reading were pretty universal about it being dirty/dumpy with a lot of expired produce and items and broken freezers. I know from my experience of living around the country that grocery chains tend to neglect their stores in certain disadvantaged areas.

Meijer attempts to take care of their stores to avoid this image. They DO take care of their employees including allowing a union to operate. However, the Mason location is also nice and conveniently off the highway. That location was built about 1999.

I miss Trader Joe's (lived near the Westlake, Ohio location).

Yeah I had regularly shopped in the one in New Albany, IN, been to several other Louisville-area meijers, and have been to the Richmond, IN one and they were all nice. I knew a lot of the stores in Michigan were older similar to how Wegmans is really nice but has really old/outdated formats in a few upstate NY stores.

In doing some research though, it seems Grand Rapids is getting a TJ's (closer than AA at least), and then Lansing is getting something called a Fresh Thyme which meijer has partial investments in...it's some sort of hybrid of a TJ's and a Whole Foods...it looks pretty awesome.

With GR getting a TJ's though it's only a matter of time before EL (most likely) gets one. They tend to like being in either decently sized metro areas or in college towns.

Since you are talking grocery stores the Kroger (on Argyle) has better prices than the Meijer (on Airport). Meijer might be fancier but it does cost more.

I have no issues with Kroger, and for the most part I would say they offer comparable deals. Sometimes Kroger does have great deals going on, and sometimes Meijer has them beat. Meijer does offer Mperks where your purchases can result in huge coupons for money off your check out, and Kroger does not have that program.

While we're talking, though, Horrocks is great and comparable to TJ's in many ways. They are just too far out of my daily route to shop there regularly.

Oh yes, Horrock's is amazing. If the OP ends up living in the Lansing area, the occasional drive to Horrocks will be worth it, even if it's a 20 minute drive or something.
