although we live in the warren consolidated school district, can i still place my daughter in a different school district (it doesn't matter if they don't provide transportation)? If i can what would be the process, she'll be starting Kindergarten.

You would be able to enroll her in a school district that is part of the "School of Choice" program. Districts don't have to participate. Many districts only have a limited number of seats and hold a lottery to select the students. Districts also have enrollment deadlines.
You need to call your chosen elementary school tomorrow (or visit their website tonight), ask them if they accept School of Choice students and if there is a deadline, lottery, etc... If the district is School of Choice and the enrollment is still open, you will have to go fill out an application. (I believe some districts may do it online)

Michigan has a school of choice program where you may be able to send your child to a neighboring district. It depends on several factors, here is a link that explains it somewhat:

MDE - Schools of Choice

The first step is to call the main office of the district that you would like your child to attend and ask them if they participate in school of choice and if so, what steps you need to take to get the process started. Some of the better districts have waiting lists.

ETA: Lol, I see that jaynarie and I were posting pretty much identical posts at the same time, so there you have it x 2. : )

lol...i appreciate the quick response. We are not in MI yet, we will be moving June 23 to gerald ave. in warren. Do you think i should call the district now or wait until i get there. Also what school in or around warren do you think or know has a good rating.

I don't live in Metro Detroit and therefore would not attempt to advise you on comparisons of school districts in that area, but I would not wait to call whatever district you decide on until you move, especially since you know your new address already.

We looked into doing this at one time when our daughter was still in school and the district that were thinking about sending her to accepted school of choice kids but also had a waiting list. We ultimately ended up homeschooling, which turned out to be a terrific and successful option for us.

I'm not from Metro Detroit, either. I have friends that teach in the area, so I know the reputation of many of the districts. But, geographically, I have no idea which districts would be feasible based on where you will be living. I'd suggest researching, and if necessary, open a thread in the Detroit subforum.

You are moving to Warren which is Macomb County. Most districts in Macomb are school of choice. Look for schools in the Utica Community Schools, L'anse Creuse Public Scools, Chippewa Valley Schools. You can also check school digger and greatschool for specific schools but most importantly talk to people that live in the area. There might be specific schools within Warren Consolidaded that might be very good and you could avoid driving far. Also for private schools St Anne is very good and very close to you.
And yes, you should be calling now.
Good Luck in the move.
