How is Bay City doing economically lately? I get the sense that it's similar to my town, Battle Creek, based on population statistics (slowly declining), but has it been getting any better there?

still hanging in there. Bay City lost a lot of the well paying manufacturing jobs in the seventies and eighties. The old brown hoist property has been redeveloped into residential and light business.

I think Bay City is doing fine. Not thriving but not dying either. Until just recently virtually all growth was focused outside the city proper however. Just the basic stereotypical story of a city losing out to the more attractive suburbs. Depopulation of the city is definitely troublesome. From what the 2014 Census projections say, we're on-par for another ~5% drop in population by 2020.

One anecdote to demonstrate this:
Five or ten years ago the newspaper moved some of its operations from downtown to a site in one of the surrounding townships. I know some people who live in the city who worked at the location in the city. Right, so now that the business has relocated a bunch of stuff, employees now have to drive out to the corn fields to go to work. I'm guessing at least some of the people who found themselves in this situation opted to relocate outside of the city at some point in time.

It's hard to say whether or not the new developments in and around the Downtown and Uptown areas will be enough to offset the economic and population losses in the city. They're focused on an entirely new demographic, one which is not currently well represented in the city, that is educated degree holders. I don't feel like prospects are extremely bright for the many low-skill people in the city.

Going forward, I'd look for Downtown and other in-demand areas to continue to improve if urban centers hold on to their current allure, and for the rest of the area to maintain more or less where they're at today.

Is there a bond between Midland and Bay City, and both cities shun Saginaw?

I don't think so. I personally find Midland to be a bit snobish, maybe too much so for Bay City to feel a sense of comradery with. All three places are fairly distinct imo. I do think in general most people shun Saginaw though, whether from Bay City, Midland, or Saginaw Township.

No, each city is intertwined to a fairly equal degree, I think. Obviously most people try to stay out of Saginaw proper if they can, but there's plenty of people who live and work between the two areas.

Population is declining and the economy is stagnant. Much hype has surrounded new businesses in the area, but almost all of them are small, family-owned shops. The Uptown development promised a ton of new jobs, but aside from Real Seafood, I believe a large number of the jobs are actually transfers from somewhere else. Dow, for example, just shifted their departments over to Bay City. No "new" jobs.

There haven't been any career-sustaining businesses opening up, so I'd say the city is dying. The housing is getting worse. People are moving to the townships, houses don't seem to sell in the city itself, no new jobs, costs rising but incomes staying the same.

Aside from a shiny new development and some new mom and pop shops, nothing SUBSTANTIAL is really happening there.
