This probably isnt a Michigan only thing but when I told my wife (from new york) I wanted an elephant ear she had no idea what I was talking about. I described it and she said "Oh, you mean fried dough?"

Okay, M-1 apparently was the first "concrete" paved roadway. It was named M-1 when route 10 was realigned to designate the importance(no noteriety) of Woodward.

I also looked up Michigan and Ginger Ale. It was invented in Ireland in 1851, but Verners was the first US soft drink.

When you make wide sweeping statements like the "first paved road anywhere," people are going to question your information.

You know, now that I think of it (memory optional with me these days) Woodward might have been the first paved road -- in Michigan. A trolley ran down it for miles (connecting Detroit to Pontiac or maybe just to Birmingham?) and it might have been cobblestone too for a while at first. Parts of the trackbed remained into the sixties, until it was all taken out to make way for all the new "MLT's."

So all is not so bad. Any corroborators?

Woodward literally meant "To the Woods". The origional trail went to Pontiac, I believe. I seem to recall trolley tracks and cobblestone in the Downtown portion of it when I was a kid, but that was 68??

Ok... have to add my 2 cents because this makes me crazy.... I grew up "downstate" and was amazed when I moved north to the relatively flat Tawases that people up here refer to downstaters as "flatlanders". I was, and still am, like "huh?"

My favorite Yooperism: "Holy wa!"

Here a couple that come from the Finns in the UP:
"sauna" with the 'au' pronounced like the 'ou' in 'out', not 'aw'.
"go school" and "go store" (no "to")

And from downstate, here's one: "prickers" instead of "thorns".
