Anyone else find working with graduates of Michigan State to be, err, a challenge? Almost all of them who work in my office (and there a lot of them) lack creative insight, workflow efficiency and problem solving skills. On the flip side, a lot of the Michigan graduates with whom I work are very bright, thoughtful individuals. I attended neither school, so I really have no side in the rivalry. This is just an observation I've made over the years.

I find that Harvard grads are the best and I don't associate with people who went to public universities. Clearly there's something wrong with them if they couldn't get into an Ivy League. Life's too short too hang out with the hoi polloi.

As an outsider with no bias whatsoever to either school, I find very little difference between UM and MSU grads. I've found both capable and talented employees, along with some less-capable and lazy employees, who are alumni of both institutions. Same with EMU, WMU and CMU. Some good employees, some bad ones, overall I can't really tell the difference between alumni of the different schools, except for I will say UM-AA alums tend to be a bit more.. overly-school-spirited.. which is cool when you're a 21 year old, partying in the student section, but less so when you're a 43 year old mid-level manager.

One thing I will note though is that OSU alumni go above and beyond with their level of annoying. Every. Single. One of them that I know feels like they need to talk about how great OSU is, and decorate their cube in extravagant amounts of OSU stuff, and discuss football when the conversation topic is what roughness coefficient to use in Manning's equation. They don't know when to quit. They're like the BYU-alums of the Midwest. (By the way, this is an insult, you never want to be the BYU of anything.)

I think you think too much about this issue. How about being an uplifting force in your workplace and not someone who looks for flaws.
