I'm considering moving to Michigan. I would love to live in a small harbor town on one of the big lakes. Can anyone give me some advice on what would be the best places to live. It will just be myself so I need a safe place.
Thank you

Port Huron or Alpena will be cheaper on the Lake Huron side.

From a safety standpoint, as long as you avoid Benton Harbor, you should be safe no matter which coastal town you end up in.

What are you considering small?

I really like Port Huron. It's grungy as hell, but I mean this in the most endearing way possible. With such a low cost to find a nice house in a safe neighborhood, if it wasn't a 60 minute commute for me I'd look into moving there in a heartbeat.

Are all excellent options on the lake Michigan side of things. Cute and touristy and several of them within an hour to GR. I always challenge my east side friends to experience Lake Michigan if they haven't. Just as I challenge my west side friends that they need to know SE MI

I really like Port Huron. The people from there call it "Port Urine" but I think that is just an accent, not a statement.

I too think Port Huron is great. They have an awesome YMCA, great coffee shops, boat rides for only a few bucks, the whole riverwalk and plenty of affordable living. They should really market themselves as a destination for people who work "virtually" for companies. You get good COLA, beach access and pretty much anything you need.

I don't know how small you want but on the Lake Huron side I will toss out Rogers City, Tawas, Port Austin and Harrisville as very small towns. They do not have the level of tourism you find on the west side of the state. Of those Tawas and Rogers City are bigger with populations in the 2,000-3,000 range.
