I've heard Michigan's "Up North" is actually the state of mind achieved by those from Metro Detroit, Lansing, or Grand Rapids as they travel north at the beginning of their vacations, the point when you see the thing that looks "Up North" and your mundane daily worries melt away. For me, it's when the pine trees start crowding in on I-75 and you can't see the southbound lanes for all of the trees.
Agreed!

Up North for me is when my allergies kick in from all of the cedar trees.

Just my own personal feeling, as I drive up 75 I feel up north as soon as I’m clear of Bay City.

As soon as you can smell the Sweet Fern while driving North on I-75, you know you are Up North!

True North begins at the 45th Parallel. Somewhere around Gaylord and beyond.

Was always for me leaving Grand Rapids that I felt like getting out of the last big city downstate was coming "up north." No big cities from that point onward until you hit Traverse City which is an up north town to me.

I like the comment here about where you smell the sweet fern (Comptonia peregrina), but I only smell it when standing in a field full!

But since I was trapped in the heckhole of the LP as a kid (and still today) I think of it starting where the public lands begin - Manistee & Huron NFs, then State Forests after that.

Northern Michigan as in all areas of Michigan north of a certain area - unlike many designations in the LP, 'northern Michigan' most definitely includes the UP (which they usually forget, esp. in the traverse city area)....

Islands and peninsulas of 'un-north' exist along the freeways, and around million dollar trophy houses (esp. clogging our Gt Lks shores) and the traverse city-NWLP sprawl areas!
