There was an interesting discussion on a friend's Facebook page the other day, about where people consider that "Northern Michigan" begins, geographically. Or what would you call Up North?

I seem to think that it's somewhere near US-10/Cadillac/Claire, but I couldn't believe the differences in opinion on the matter. (Some people thought just North of GR was Up North. Nope. )

And what do people in Southeast Michigan think of when they say Up North or Northern Michigan? Where does that start?

Go!

I would say just north of Saganaw Bay really starts to feel like the "north", so say Tawas City and west Branch, over to Cadillac and Manistee.

It started in me when I was just a kid and we went up to our cabin in Hale. At the time we lived in Durand (between Flint and Lansing), and I always considered it up North when we got to around Standish. I would imagine people living further South, their version of Up North might be around Clare. Now I consider up North to start around a line from Cadillac East. To me, living here in Gaylord is my dream area since I have wanted to move North my whole life. This is right smack dab in the middle of Up North as far as I'm concerned. Now when we head North we don't say were going Up North anymore. Now it's "let's head to (insert town name here)..or the U.P (AKA Heaven)

From a serious standpoint, I think I would agree with this. After crossing Zilwaulkee it seems like you are now "up north" That makes a goo dividing line.

Except where is the Ausable River. That seems pretty up north to me.

I ill have to go look for a map.

Houghton Lake. Take a line from East to West right across the state. Anything from there North is "Northern Michigan".
