Hi All,

I'm a 27 year old man currently living in Indianapolis and contemplating a move to Metro Detroit. My move would occur between January and March of 2018. I'm very familiar with the area as my dad is from and currently works in the city, so housing would not be an issue. I would stay at his place for about 6 months before moving into my own place.

I've recently applied to 4 of the community colleges in the area to get my prerequisites out of the way before applying to a nursing program. I'm currently working an entry-level position at one of the hospitals outside of Indy. Does anyone have advice on the best hospitals to apply to?

I'm pretty well informed on the economics of the region, but I'd still appreciate the perspectives and opinions from some of the locals in the area. How difficult do you think it would be to secure employment in the metro area, specifically healthcare (patient care tech, patient access, etc) ? Indianapolis has a pretty healthy economy, however, I see the positive trends and changes taking place in the Detroit area. Would it be a good move or am I way in over my head?

They say the best nurses come out of Detroit Receiving. Our daughter had done a nursing program at Schoolcraft (probably the better of the CC) and was told the best place to get experience was the emergency room at Detroit Receiving.

Wayne County College District is probably a close second...personally I would stay away from Oakland Community College.
Henry Ford Community College (aka HANK HIGH) also has a respected nursing program)
Washtenaw Community College isn't bad, but if you are not at U of M (I think there is a Providence Hospital close) it is a drive to the nearest Beaumont Hospital.

Best working conditions in the metro area? Probably U of M, Beaumont, Botsford and Providence in no particular order.

Nursing is still in demand, especially at the urban hospitals.

I have two siblings that graduated from Henry Ford Community College with their nursing degrees. Both obtained jobs before graduation. One went into the hospital environment and the other went into home care. The hospitals are pushing for nurses to get their bachelors so keep that in mind. Good luck!
