I just received my rent lease renewal for the year and in the notice there is a blurb regarding the proposed state service tax and how if signed into law, residents will be responsible for paying the state service tax on rent.

This is an aspect of the service tax bill I've not heard of until now... I'm not sure I really consider renting a "taxable service" (although - I guess "technically" it could be)...

Can anybody confirm whether or not rent is included as an effected "service" this bill??

I couldn't find it, but I did find this gem on the site:

"It is important to resolve any outstanding tax you owe as soon as possible. Penalty and interest will be added to your debt and will continue to grow until the amount is paid in full. Penalty charges can range from 25% to 500% of the tax due, depending on the type of the tax!"

Holy wow! If the minor things didn't drive me out of business in Michigan, I would of definitely shut down in a heartbeat after reading this idiocy.

LOL. Where's the compassion for people needing help? If I made an accounting error and couldn't pay my taxes for a quarter, they could more than double by the next?

What's it going to take for these people to come around?

Wholesale removal from office.

This is either a hoax or this state is even sicker than I think, considering that 20 - 40% of rent is already property tax. Renters already pay more more property tax thanks to the 18 mills extra school tax on non-owner occupied property.
Whether there's a service tax impossed or not, I must say that if I was a landlord, I'd itemize the property tax on the bill and make it clear that any increases in property tax will passed on directly in the rent. Too many renters are conned into voting for feel good tax referendums thinking its not coming out of thier pockets. People need to do the math and realize that in reality we are all just renting our property from the state. If you buy a home in your 20s or 30s by the time you die you will have paid more property taxes than you paid for the house. It's absurd to even consider imposing more taxes on housing.

better not be a hoax... it's in the contract extension (renewal) of my rental agreement. If it's a hoax then I need to have a very serious conversation with my landlord...

regarding the tax itself... you're right when you say that the majority of what renters already pay is tax. I can't believe the absurd tax rates in this area now...
