Township Square is REAL close to the 'Death Train', (our local nickname for it) train tracks. That's a train line, which ships dangerous chemicals between Dow Chemical plant in Midland, to Freeport Texas. I wouldn't want to live so close to that, just in case of a derailment. Not sure how much noise it causes either on its runs.

That's kind of worrisome about the trains.

I hate that the best two options for me both lack one important thing. One place doesn't have covered parking. The other doesn't have washer and dryer hook-ups in the unit. Maybe I'll just do a six month lease and hope to find something with everything. But who knows if I'll be able to move at all at this point with the lockdowns

It'll certainly be colder than TX, but "brutally cold" it is not - except for the occasional "polar vortex".
This guy hasn't lived in the Midwest since he was 10 years old and has been in nothing but warm climates since. I think he's definitely going to find Saginaw winters "brutal" on many occasions in contrast to what he's used to. You don't need a polar vortex in the upper Midwest for it to be 15 degrees with a 25-30 mph wind.....which I would definitely classify as "brutal". And how about those miserable cold, windy rains that precede the snow in autumn? Yeah, he's in for a big change, no sense in sugarcoating it.

Well, the last major derailment that I know of for sure was in 1989 at the edge of Freeland, just before they made it to the Dow Midland plant. So, something to be aware of, but not to be too scared of. They are far more careful now with their speed and such, than they used to be.

Our area doesn't have too many cases of the Covid-19 so far, and the governor locked down pretty quickly. So that should help flatten the curve and help things out. You'll be at ground zero by working at a hospital anyway. My son is an RN, and a visiting nurse, and he hasn't got it as of yet. Go ahead and move when the time comes, but bring your own toilet paper, lol.

Freeland is a nice area if you want more rural. About 20 minutes to VA. But, maybe a longer drive than you want.

Which is why I gave the OP a link to compare average temps.

How many days this winter were 15 or below with 20+ mph winds?

Not many, but we were lucky...Last year though we had the polar vortex at -14 and it stayed an entire week. My furnace just kept cycling and cycling and cycling...never stopped all week long.

Brother, just prepare yourself for the worst and hope for the best. This past winter was very mild by upper Midwestern standards. Every now and then mother nature cuts us a "break". Most winters you're going to freeze your ba%$! off up here from basically November through April....sometimes even extending into May.... and get way more snow than you care to look at. Locals can disagree if they choose, but people like you and I who have spent a lot of our lives in the south are gonna be way more sensitive to those types of conditions. Adapt or perish.....what else can you do?

Oh, I remember. It was literally the week after we moved back home from Charlotte, NC.
