We are shopping for new car insurance now that MetLife sold out to Farmers. We had liked MetLife but not Farmers, after bad experience with Farmers with property insurance refusing to pay on a basic valid claim.

So far have found these insurance companies that are popular in Michigan:
Auto Owners
GEICO
State Farm
AAA
Progressive

We are over age 55+ but have a son soon to be driving who is 17 years old.

Would are looking for tips as to companies to avoid, & what to ask for in a policy, such as "unlimited medical" & how much liability based on net worth, etc. Do you request GAP insurance, or not? Are policies usually standard coverage or do you choose to take some things out due to having coverage already with your health insurance plan?

My husband wants to use an insurance broker to shop around, but they had so far sent us quotes from companies that I've never even heard of, and that are listed as "independent insurance" agencies.

Our best prices by far were MEEMIC (with the educator discount) or Liberty Mutual (coupled with our homeowners insurance which is also massively cheaper with liberty mutual).

The difference between either of them and Allstate or State Farm was in the hundreds per month.
