This might sound silly but I have noticed a lack of hornets this year. I wonder if it means anything? Usually I have to deal with them every year.

Same here. I took out a couple of nests around my house. One was behind my brick and the buggers were getting inside.

If you are referring to what I used to call a European Yellow Jacket, I agree. I don't know that I have been bothered by them. Maybe because the mosquitoes are so bad I have spent less time eating outside.
That is the one flying insect I haven't seen.

I had a ton of these earlier in the summer....they like to get in behind the wood siding on our house.
Had a ton in June / July but haven't seen any this fall and I'm not complaining.

There do seem to be fewer yellowjackets than some years, but bald faced hornets have replaced them and more.

I was sitting at my patio table a week or so ago and felt quite a sharp stab on the back of my thigh. Rubbed my leg quickly and looked to the ground, I killed a bald faced hornet. Burned off and on a little for about an hour. Haven't been stung in many years, wasn't as bad as I remember.

Chickens will eat the hornets too - of they can get to them. I used to dump our Yellow Jacket traps intot he chicken run and they would go nots for the special snack.
