I pray by then we'll have access to cars that get 50 miles a gallon (at least), so it'll all be relative.

One bennie of living in Michigan...we don't have to drive far to get to a vacation paradise.

Subaru supposedly produced a prototype Deisel car that gets well over 100 MPG. I wonder if we will ever see it in production?

Probably not if Shell and Marathon have anything to say about it.

If gas gets to $10/gallon, my wife will probably quit working. She will not earn enough to cover the cost of going to work.

We will park the motor boat and paddle the canoe. Maybe we should get a horse. I could bike to work, but it is 27 miles and not real practical in a suit. Not real safe either. Can't bike in the snow. One thing that I will do is push for working at home more often. Perhaps every Friday at a minimum. With the internet and electronic scanning of documents, most office jobs can now be done just as readily at home as in an office. Kind of hard to share thoughts or advice around the water cooler or over lunch with collegues though.

One thing is certain, Major changes will be necessary.

You're kidding, right? The U.S. auto industry is going down the toilet. Michigan has, by a full percentage point, the highest unemployment rate in the U.S.

Yeah, good luck getting ego-driven Americans to share and combine resources for mutual benefits. Why should person A carpool with person B when person A can buy an H2 or SUV and show person B how superior he is? ...and people WOULD use reliable public transportation in Michigan (especially trains)...if it existed!!!
That will happen. People who previously would never back of driving or car poolin, or use public transportation are doing so. California highways, though still congested, has definitely dropped off in traffic volume.
