We are ready to retire and get closer to our grands in Indiana. I went to college in Big Rapids, but that was 42 years ago (gulp!) We are old school hippies, liberal and are looking at the area outside of Kalamazoo, or the SW area of the state. We have bees and honey, so looking for a couple of acres about 20 minutes outside of town. Is this area liberal? Are there plenty of restaurants, medical care etc? I want to go back to school at 65, are there local colleges? Is this a hard-core MAGA area or is it more liberal? What is the crime rate like? Any insight is so welcome! Thank you!!

It’s pretty mixed- more liberal in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids/Kent County and then pretty MAGA in more exurban areas. Both of those will also offer higher ed options for you. The question is budget- create close in to Grand Rapids can get pretty expensive these days.
