Is the violent crime in Flint focused around a specific area/s? Need to know what areas to avoid. Thanks!

Pretty much everything north of the River should be avoided at all costs. South of the River you'll be fine in the immediate Downtown vincinity, UM-Flint/Mott/Cultural District - this stretches from Downtown all the way over to Dort Highway. And along Court Street and Flushing Road between Downtown and Corunna Road (Flint Twp. Border). Everything in between those two main roads is fine.

In sum - avoid EVERYTHING NORTH OF THE RIVER.

I agree with michiganalum - the further north you go, the worse it is. Anything north of 5th Ave. I would definitely avoid, as well as the area around Hurley Medical Center. Those are the areas where the crime seems to be most concentrated. Downtown and areas around any of the colleges are fine.

Just play it safe around Hurley. It's a public hospital in the City of Flint, so unlike Genesys and MacLaren (Private), you're going to have questionable people coming and going. If you're there during the day, you'll be fine as long as you are mindful of the surroundings. If you're there at night, park close to the building and in a lighted area.

North side: any where near Clio Rd, Pasadena Ave or Pearson Rd.
East side: around the state streets (Montana, Colorado, etc...) The violent crime is not as bad, but overall crime is awful.

And, to be stereotypical, the North side is African American. The east side is hispanic and white trash.

Any other areas may have isolated bad areas, but these areas have a lot of problems in a large radius.

The safest areas with-in Flint would be Miller Rd area and the College Cultural area. Also, the edges that touch Burton are usually fine. For example, near Center Rd.

It all depends what is important to you. The College Cultural and Woodcroft area (near Miller and Ballenger) are very upscale and full of very fine homes that remain very well kept. While I would avoid the east side north of Davison Road...the area south of Davison Road and north of Robert T Longway is undergoing a resurgence with an influx of the creative class, artisans, activists, musicians and young professionals moving in and redeveloping this area. Attractions that you may want to check out are Kearsley Park (large park, includes amphitheatre used frequently for plays, concerts etc.) and the PeaceMob Community Gardens/sustainable living demonstration area. The area around Mott Park and Court and Corunna Roads is also nice if you are looking for a quiet, stable, relatively safe middle income neighborhood. All in all, with the substantial redevelopment of downtown and expansion by the colleges over the past few years. Flint is showing the beginning signs of a thorough revitalization. Despite the negative coverage in the press, if you are aware of your surroundings and not involved in any shady activities that would draw unwanted attention to yourself you shouldn't have any problems.

The downtown area of Flint is the only section that looks safe to me.
