I guess there is never anything that last forever , or really stable about living on or near a base, be it old and forgotten like Sawyer or be it one of the over crowded , under staffed , crime infested, operating military bases around the World.

There has been rumors that KI Sawyer could be coming back as a Military post or something less noticeable. Interesting that the US Government still owns most of the land out there, and there have been a lot of military licensed vehicles around Marquette the last 6 months....Something IS going on , but who knows......what ?

I would recommend Bassett Rental Properties (Bassett Properties) or MACASU. They both screen tenants carefully, so you know you'll have nice neighbors.

I thought of something. Who is currently the tenant of the old barracks? If they are just sitting there derelict, then there should be a plan to do something with them. Maybe there is a way to build something new.

I am planning to move to the up in may from Iowa. Trading corn fields for trees!! My kids and I love Michigan and have vacationed in the thumb area for a few years, until the ex and I split up. When I asked them about moving, it was an instant Michigan! Lol I found an apartment in ki sawyer (fingers crossed that I get it and can move in may 1!) and put in an app. I currently work at an elem school in the kitchen and would love to find a place like this to work so sent an app to the school. Gonna love yooper living!!

I suggest you read all the posts on this long going thread. You will find more negatives than positives....Aside from that , Sawyer is 20 miles south of Marquette , where everything is happening..You should consider the travel cost as well as the conditions. Many folks have found their cheap living abode at Sawyer to be more expensive than in Neguanee or even Marquette due to this distance factor. Because Marquette is a growing City , more so everyday you might consider employment there where the choices are much greater. No one has ever regretted living in Marquette, even if living cost were a bit higher. Gas is not so cheap ether these days, take that into consideration before you move .

Is there any cheaper housing Marquette? As a single mom I have to watch for a good place to live within my budget. I've seen some apartments on Craigslist, but I can't afford $1200 for a 3 bdrm place. And I def need a 3 bdrm home. I don't have to be in ki sawyer just upper Michigan somewhere. Is there a good newspaper up there to look at? Thanks!!

Yes you can contact the Mining Journal on line, which may take you to apts for rent. You need a house to rent. There are very few apts. w/ 3 bedrooms. Yes Marquette is as expensive as the Detroit area or suburban Chicago for rentals. One reason is NMU and the Hospital complex. There IS a shortage of housing up here. They are building new as fast as they can, we are in a boom town mentality up here. One town over is Negaunee where cost are lower and there are many older homes for rent ( its an old mining town ). Marquette borders most of the area in the Township so distance is not near as far as Sawyer and with better security. The old base has a bad rep for drugs and street crime, but , I am told its improving. They are taking down many buildings and trying to clean up the place, keep in mind is was once the largest Airbase in the World.... Its common for realtors to handle rentals up here, you might want to check wit some of those , like Remax ect.

Ok I'll check those out. I just know that tho I was born and raised in Iowa, Michigan is where I want to be. And I have to have at least a 3 bdrm since my kids are a 13 yr old boy and an 11 yr old girl. Do you know anything about Manistique? I found a house there I could maybe afford. Lol I'm a planner, so want to have it all planned out and everything ready to move at the end of April. Heck, I've already started packing!!

Manistique is a nice town on the shore of Lake Michigan. Not a lot of activity going on there compared to the western UP......and , it's not on Lake Superior, where everyone wants to be ! Marquette is the only real city with a solid metro trade area in the UP. It's been said when we gain statehood Marquette will be the Capatil and for good reason !
