I recently got engaged and we are looking for a venue for the wedding. I love the Westin in Southfield, the beautiful indoor garden atrium for the ceremony and the ballrooms for the reception, and hotels upstairs so that no one has to worry about transportation. The only problem is that I can't do it there because my cousin had her wedding there just a few years ago. I am looking for something similar. My family is from the Detroit area and my fiance's family is from the Lansing area so we are open to anywhere in between. If you have any ideas please let me know!

We got married at Orchard Lake St. Mary's. The church was nice enough, but the grounds were spectacular. Also most of the single sex Catholic High Schools in the area have really pretty chapels. Academy of the Sacred Heart was gorgeous. But you often have to have an in....

Our reception was at the Hotel Baronette in Novi. It was fantastic-- family members still mention how nice it was and that was 9 years ago. The room was pretty. The food outstanding! You got a bunch of stuff if you comitted to a minimum dollar amount that you would spend. It worked out well for our families, as mine was from Metro Detroit and my husband's from the Lansing area and beyond. It's really easy to get to, as most folks can find 12 Oaks Mall. They were really great to work with at the Baronette!

I'm not sure of the different venues, but there is the Dearborn Inn which is very pretty, as well as the Hyatt in Dearborn.

Just to second MICoastieMom, a co-worker of mine was married in the Martha and Mary non-denominational chapel on the grounds of Greenfield Village. Nice little white clap-board church with a white steeple, professional organ player up in the loft, and great locations to take pictures right around the chapel.

I'll also back up ImaMichigander re Catholic Churches...most parish priests don't want to be in the "wedding chapel business" (a la Las Vegas) so they'll only allow parishioners to get married in their churches. My brother did get married in the chapel at the Academy of Sacred Heart, his only in was being a long-time Catholic...and having the wherewithal to pay the fee. The chapel at Sacred Heart is larger than normal, but smaller than a full-sized church, and had a very nice feel to it. However, it'll would have to be a Catholic service (along with the "marriage training course" that the Church requires), and one of the two getting married has to belong to the Catholic Church.

My son and his wife got married in a rush in Dec. because her job was taking her to Abu Dhabi. They are going to have another ceremony and a reception at The Whitney The Whitney They chose to reserve the whole restaurant which isn't cheap but includes a lot of stuff. It's a beautiful place and does have valet parking for those who are skittish about going DT.

Reading back on this post, the original poster expressed a desire for a place like the Westin Hotel in Southfield, because of
  1. The indoor garden for the ceremony.
  2. The reception right at the same facility.
  3. Hotel rooms for the guests to stay at (no driving involved).
The Westin itself is out, she (I'm assuming CraveCase is a she, my apologies if I'm incorrect) is looking for a place between Metro Detroit and Lansing inclusive that has the attributes above.

As great as Greenfield Village, Orchard Lake St Mary's, Academy of Sacred Heart, the Whitney, and Cranbrook are, they don't fit the bill here.

So what's a nice larger hotel with a good space for a wedding that's somewhere either in Metro Detroit, in Lansing, or somewhere in between?

The Marriot in Detroit. (Ren Cen) Mariners church is right next door. Several good places for a wedding and a reception. Hotel rooms are handy. Entertainment for guests is available at Casinos, theaters, sports complexes, or right in the RenCen. Canada is handy for batchlor parties.

Since Greenfield Village not only has the Mary Martha Chapel, but several lovely garden spots and it has a ballroom and a large lounge area, I think it does fit the bill.

And if you only prefer to tour the museum and the village, there is the Dearborn Inn across the street.
