Okay, so I'm on the move as well...I've lived in Virginia, Colorado, Idaho, and currently in New Mexico and I'm thinking about moving. We(girlfriend and I) are thinking of going to Idaho, but Michigan popped in my mind recently as I went to visit an aunt who lived in Muskegon several times as a child back in the early 90s, and I would like to go there again. That being said...

I know to stay away from Flint&Detroit...I saw that in Roger And Me and I know that the UP seems a bit too isolated for my tastes. And I know Grand Rapids sounds like its doing fine, but I never hear anything about Lansing...

Just curious before we make the final decision about going back to potato land...

I moved out of Lansing about six years ago. The economy was just starting to get bad at that time, and since I left, my family members who are still there are having a rough time of it. I also have family in the Grand Rapids area, and they are getting along pretty well. Lansing is a city that does not seem like it should be the capital of the state. There is not much to do, not that many job opps, and the schools are sadly lacking. Just my opinion but there is no way I would ever want to go back to Michigan, although if I had to, it would be around the Grand Rapids area.

Thanks! I figurered there would be some major problems, but what state/city doesn't have their share.

As for being capital of the state, well there is a lot of capitals that shouldn't be capitals in my opinion. Pierre South Dakota anyone?

Since you have family in Muskegon...try looking at the Grand Haven/Ferrysburg/Spring Lake area... It is close enough to commute to Grand Rapids or Muskegon and you are still on the Lake with good shopping, restaurants, and parks.

I wouldn't like the Lansing area, but that is just my tastes.

Personally, I love Lansing. MSU is right next door, so there's plenty of stuff to do ... not to mention three malls now (well, that's important to ME, LOL!). And Detroit and Chicago aren't that far (about two and four hours, respectively), if you want to go to major sporting events, etc.

I think it's overall quite safe, too ... I've lived in this area for 12 years now, and there's no part of Lansing I wouldn't drive through at night, and very few where I would be distressed to walk through at night.

While Lansing proper has had a lot of issues with its schools lately (mostly politics -- infighting and crap), many of the suburban schools are awesome -- Holt, Okemos and East Lansing, especially.
