what happened to the good old days when people weren't scared of stepping outside of their own house?
now everyone is going to die if they don't adhere to these scare tactics. one day of not wearing seat belts to pick up cans does not equal death.

ha - welcome to the facist states of america. lol, we even have laws that say what you can and cannot say in front of women and children. Just ask that poor bastard from Standish. We have so many stupid "Nanny" laws it's not even funny.
Well, part of the problem is the impact on others. When people don't wear seat belts and they lose control they get shot all over the car, losing any ability to control the vehicle and risking collision with other cars / pedestrians. Perhaps the motorcycle helmet law would fall under a "nanny" law, since it really only impacts the rider.

But it's like the smoking bans in bars and restaurants. People choose actions that are intrinsically harmful to others (such as killing them slowly with disease) and then complain when the government takes away their very superficial interpretation of "freedom".

A highly evolved society would function on the principle that all life exists as one. What you do to the least of your brothers you do unto me... No one would choose to drive without a seat belt or smoke in public because they would know it is potentially or intrinsically damaging to others, so therefore it is damaging to themselves. Evolve to this unity, end the need for government oversight.

I'm not looking for a big off-topic debate. Just wanted to put this issue in its proper context.

Listen, it's pretty simple. Tell your husband to buckle up the kids, grandkids or anyone else for that matter and to forget about what he thinks that the law does or does not say. It's common sense AND, it keeps their faces out of the dashboard and the windshield.

Boy that is very graphic. Sometimes it is what people need to hear.

I agree. Impact at low speeds kills too. A man from my college died in the parking lot driving 15mph when his car was hit and he went "part way" through the windshield.
Anyhow, I appreciate the support. I made a stink about this and told my husband I always want our children strapped in....but I can't always be there to make sure it happens. I wish I had a husband that would follow my wishes with the children all the time....especially when I am not around.

ANY driving without seatbelts for anyone old enough to use them -- baby seats or (in a couple more months) booster seats for the others -- is illegal. If you're collecting bottles I suggest you have the kids walk alongside the car. They can use the exercise anyway, am I right?
