Why does the NFL continue this stupid tradition of having the Lions play on Thanksgiving?

Maybe they used to be good and it was a safe bet for a decent game. Of course that was before living memory. This year I think it is to honor all the other turkeys that have fallen for the day. Kind of a sacrificial lamb to slaughter thing.

"back in the day" the Lions, although not great, were frequently respectable. And, we used to have guys like Billy Sims and Barry Sanders who made it worthwhile to watch even if the team's record wasn't the best. Little did we know that the mediocre 1990's were as good as it gets as far as the Lions go. With all of the national TV coverage (Thursday nights, Sunday nights, Monday nights) of which the Lions never get on, throwing them a bone and giving them Thanksgiving is a tradition worth maintaining. Hey, if things go according to expectations, we'll have two teams with perfect records going head to head a week from Thursday!!
