The only places I've seen the Au Sable (stopped when driving around) it was really quite wide and seemed pretty deep with some current, as in a little scary to me. Its pretty long though so there are probably trips that are a little less scary I would just have to do some research.
Thanks for the Kalamazoo specifics, more accessible since my Mom lives in Albion.
And for the Black River Otter tip - yes! What's the river like?

I canoed the river on an overnight trip when i was 12! there are parts where it is shallow and very narrow and curvy! i LOVED it! yes it was a little adrenaline rush a few times because there are trees poking out that us twelve year olds ran into...but that made it much more adventurous! it is beautiful!!!!!!! google it...but make sure you google the one in michigan
if it is current you are worried about...ask the local fisherman or call the chamber to find out when is the best time...

and the beginning of the black river is VERY wide and deep..but the farther up river you go the more narrow it becomes....and popular for canoers and kayakers
