I'm curious as to whether you had stretches of amended soil. I and many of my garden-club friends have lived there over the years and we exchanged almost-identical gloomy reports of heavy clay, heavier clay and impenetrable, rock-hard clay.

Thanks for all the info, everyone! I haven't been online lately, but some good views to consider. The points about gardens being good along the lake are well-taken. Also, interesting about the Washtenaw county soil. I will continue to look. I would love finding someplace with some nut trees especially.
