U.P. Weather History
It is written by Karl Bohnak, who is our local weatherman here in the U.P. The book is not just about weather, it is more about the history of the area. My brother from Maryland came up this past Xmas, starting reading my moms book(bought at my insistance), and ended up taking it home with him! IMO...a MUST read for all interested in the Upper Peninsula!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! This book is right up my alley. Found a good used one on Amazon for $9.00 Thanks a bunch Lindsey!
Also got my eye on a few others mentioned in here.

"Letters from the Leelanau" and "Lake Country" by Kathleen Stocking are also good reads.

Quote:
Far away from everything and on the way to nowhere lies the Leelanau Peninsula. This gentle landscape of rolling hills and bays of Lake Michigan has become home to many a world-weary traveler. Letters from the Leelanau represents a ten-year slice of life on this northern peninsula. Writer Kathleen Stocking, daughter of Leelanau lumberman Pierce Stocking, shares in a genuinely infectious way an easy intimacy with both the people and the land in these essays written in the years 1979 to 1989. Life in a village, she writes, "gives me a primal sense of the human community, a sharing of life with those who acknowledge—albeit silently, simply by their being there too—that we can't live ontologically meaningful lives in isolation.

Although I haven't read his books, they are outdoorsy oriented and I'm not much of an outdoor sports person, Jerry Dennis is pretty popular at least around TC. He's a nice guy too from what I understand, his kids went to the same school as mine. Amazon.com: Jerry Dennis: Books

Well back from the bookstore. Had to wait a bit longer to get in than anticipated (kids home sick from school). Michael Beres is a Michigan author, but most of his books are set outside of the state. He has one "Grand Traverse" which I picked up today. There is one by Charles W. Jay that is "My new Northern Michigan home" that looked like it is going on my list of books to read. along with Robert J Hammond's "Gales of November" about the sinking of the Mighty Fitz. Also on the list is Richard Baldwin with "A Final Crossing - Murder on the SS Badger" it is a murder mystery on board the SS Badger which sails right out of Ludington here so I have to read that one . There is Sally DeFreites and her mystery book "If the shoe fits" as well as Cullis Gayle's "Northwoods Road" All look like interesting reads, and not all the same genre.

This thread has made me think a bit more about looking for books either written my Michigan Authors or books about Michigan itself. Haven't reallt did much in that vein over the years.

I know the TC library has a Michigan room and I bet other libraries do as well where it might be possible to find more books set in MI than you want!

Check your libraries for the Cully Gage Northwood Readers series. Mainly written for kids/young adults but I came across them before moving up here (West Branch, MI library) and really enjoyed them
His real name was Charles Van Riper. His village in the stories are based on the village of Champion, MI.
My family and I spend a lot of time in the summer at the Van Riper State park. If you're looking for a vacation spot and wish to make it more interesting for the family, read those books in the weeks before you come up

PJ Parrish is a pair of sister from Michigan. They write about a PI from Florida, however one book of their's I think it's called A Thousand Bones takes place on the Leelanau Peninsula. I really enjoyed it.
