Be very careful and do a lot of research. I don't have a lot of knowledge on the immediate area. We live in Elkhart IN...which is 45 min from Benton Harbor. The few times I have driven through, it appears there are two extremes. There are the very rich and the very, very poor. Crime rate is high from what I understand. Check things out before making the move.

Just go visit for youself would be my suggestion, rather then take advice from someone not living in the area occasionally passing through.
Compared to Milwaukee, Benton Harbor is obviously a lot smaller. NOt a lot of public transportation, but none is needed really. St. Joseph is right next door and has some rather inexpensive houses, but I don't know specifically where since it has been a few years since I lived in the area.

Try places like Coloma, Stevensville, Fair Plain, Benton Heights, Berrien Springs, Baroda and many others to think about. Here's a list of nearby communities:Berrien County, Michigan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You can't go wrong with St.Joseph, if I can only get a job around there it would be my first choice to get a house.

St. Joseph is a pretty town, but it is a bit snooty, but then I am dirt poor and if you are middle class it probably will be a great place for you. I have been pretty happy with my church here though and the libraries are nice and clerks in stores are kind here and the aparments I live in are some of the best ever. {wish I could just keep this apt while divorcing, but he wont move out!} There is a lot of nice places to eat and lots of nice little shops, does have the tourist stuff going. Benton Harbor is very poor though they are trying to gentifry the downtown, and there is a few decent art gallories and businesses down there, so youll want to stay away from that stuff.
