Hi. I was wondering about the possibility of jobs in the Houghton area and the Marquette area. I keep reading poeple complaining that there are no jobs. Are they talking about high paying jobs? I would be looking for retail or food service. Hopefully full time with benefits. I am NOT looking for a $ 50,000 a year job. Would I still be ok? I currently make $18.00/hr here in Philadelphia. I am a receiving office manager. I don't need to make that much in the U.P.. I just want to be happy and safe

Default Move very slowly

Marquette is a college town, there is a surplus of young motivated and cheap workers there. It is difficult to make a go of it there, IMO. Although it is 'cheap' there you will spend quite a bit on energy costs to offset the l o n g winters. Same thing in Houghton. Your best option is a good 'State' Job. And right now I am not sure that there is such a thing in Michigan

Marquette is the most expensive city in the U.P. and the most expensive city I've personally lived in, in the state of Michigan. Jobs are quite scarce this past year, even the retail/food service jobs.
Houghton is cheaper (real estate) then Marquette but I haven't a clue as to the job market there.

Good thing you are NOT looking for a 50K per year job in the U.P., you won't find one. Don't count on finding an $18.00 an hour job either. Forget about a state job also. They are laying off. Even in good times a decent paying job here is tough to find and with 15% unemployment, well you get the idea. I am not trying to discourage you, just a reality check.

If you are in Health Care, you can score a job @ $50k+ per annum. Otherwise, it will be difficult.
