I am considering U of M Dearborn for a masters in mechanical engineering. How does its reputation compare to the main campus in Ann Arbor? How does it compare to other local universities like Lawrence Tech or Wayne State?

Well I wouldn't go to UM-Dearborn for graduate school. UM-Ann Arbor is popular for engineering, not sure about Lawrence and WSU.

I agree with the top poster, UM-Dearborn isn't the best for many graduate programs, including engineering. From what I've heard Lawrence Tech and UM-Ann Arbor have the most highly ranked and competitive engineering degrees. A family member of mine went into the graduate engineering program at Lawrence and found work within the month he graduated. He told me that 98% Lawrence grads find work within the first three months of graduation or less. Obviously with the economy the way it is it may be harder to find an engineering position in Michigan, but I know for a fact that Lawrence is nationally ranked. Lawrence also has many financial aid oppertunities, unlike U of M, were financial aid is much harder to get.

Also, look into U of D Mercy, I know that they pride themselves on having a good engineering school.

Thanks. UM-Ann Arbor would be great, but it's not really conducive for a working adult. I see that most of their upper level grad classes meet twice a week in the morning and afternoon. I like that LTU and UM-Dearborn have the entire curriculum offered at night.

I did my undergrad at LTU and I thought that a degree from UM-D would give me a more well rounded education and maybe some more credibility (especially outside of MI), but it sounds like their upper level engineering program doesn't carry much clout...

I'll check out UofD; I have heard they are extremely expensive though...
Thanks!

Have you considered credit transfers and what school will give you the best options? I did my undergrad at LTU as well and seem to remember my classmates taking classes that were part of the Master's program there.

I didn't even realize UofM dearborn had a master's in engineering program. Is there a way to take a majority of classes there then transfer to the main campus to finish up?

At one time I was looking into an MBA or MEM at LTU so I am not as familar with other programs.
