I've gotta say, the new signs they put when you cross over from Toledo do look much snazzier!

Sounds like I need a road trip to Toledo to check out these signs.... let's see, hit a quilt shop or two and Tony Paco's.

I agree! I work in the Toledo area and live in Michigan. I see that new sign everyday and it doesn't look that good to me. Plus I am so sick of this whole PURE Michigan thing. It's stupid and doesn't even make sense. A state with closed down manufacturing plants claiming to be pure. Yeah right. Michigan does need to promote tourism but I just don't get this new theme.

What are you talking about...Michigan has tons of "Pure" beauty...thus the ads.

True. But "Pure" is a poor word choice. It means whole, free of contanimants, untainted, etc. Given our industrial heritage and nationally recognized crime areas, that is hardly Michigan now is it? How would Pure New Jersey grab you?
Naturally Michigan or Wild Michigan may have worked better. I always kind of liked the Great Lake Splendor slogan as well.

I liked the "Great Lakes Splendor" signs the best too. I think the "Pure Michigan" signs are kind of boring. To the state's credit, they worked hard to get them changed everywhere, even on inconsequential country roads that cross the border between Ohio and Michigan in places like Ottawa Lake and Blissfield and only see a couple of hundred cars a day if that.

um...have you ever been beyond Detroit? I see those ads and I immediately recognize them as accurate. I'm from Kalamazoo, grew up near the lake and camped up north every summer. Those ads are a very accurate image of Michigan--OUTSIDE Detroit.

Want to promote travel to MI? Fix the roads! I think MI must be the pothole capital of the world. But the short-term problem with that is that they'll try to do it in the summer which creates travel headaches for all of those they are trying to attract to the state.
