Hey guys, just another unemployed michigander, found this forum and thought maybe some knowledgeable unemployed or people that know about the system could answer a few questions for me.

1. For the Work search requirement for extended benefits where we fill out 3 applications per week, can I use Online Job applications such as monster.com or the companies website? Most of my job applies are through the internet as with everything these days.

2. Regarding other income while you are on UE, does rental income affect your weekly payments? I was told only "earned" income would affect the payment amount. From what I can gather, rental income is considered "unearned" income. Any idea?

Thanks in advance guys!!

#1 yes although I've noticed it when you submit your 3 weekly online it will not accept some website addresses, so I'll put in their fax number and fax it.

#2 I don't know

Ya when it said it didn't accept the website, I would then just click the "other" category and put it in their as something like "monster resume submission" or something..

#1 - You can absolutely use websites for the 3 job submission. I do virtual work and my sole means of job applications are through the virtual job site. I've never had a problem with the online unemployment submission form. I always use the "Other" category.

#2 - As for this, that's a tough question. In reading through this UIA doc: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ui...01_76146_7.pdf - page 10 specifically, it doesn't address rental income. However, I thought that when submitting to MARVIN, there was a question that asks you to report "any other income."

When in doubt, have some fun and sit on the phone for 30 minutes while you wait for UIA to answer your question.

Thanks... anyone have a solid answer to the 2nd question!!!???

I am almost positive you do not have to claim "unearned" income such as rent income and whatnot but just looking for feedback from others who may have already asked this question.

I can't directly help you with the unearned income question as I'm blessed to have never filed for UE benefits. But, as far as the IRS is concernred, as well as the State of Michigan for income taxes, rental income 'is' considered "earned income". I found that out when I met with my CPA this year to re-structure the status of my home that I have leased w/an option to buy. I needed to know how much I'd need to contribute to my IRA to try to offset my income. I specifically questioned the rental/lease income and he told me about the earned income classification.
