I am thinking about purchasing a home in Oakland County. I have a 2.5 year old daughter and this is a really big decision for me. I currently rent in Auburn Hills and the town is OK. I haven't had any problems, but this is a Pontiac school district.

I am considering Troy, Rochester Hills, Lake Orion and Clarkston, because they all have really good schools. I really don't know much any either town, so I'm really trying to get a feel for where my daughter and I will be comfortable. I'm looking for a town that's acceptin of my ethnicity and the fact that I'm a single parent.

Any suggestions or towns that I maybe over looking?

Tracey

I can't answer your question, as I haven't lived in SE MI in years, but one thing that might help others give you some ideas would be to know what city you work in. Unless you work from home, that might be a huge factor.

Hello,

Lake Orion is still a developing city that will probably continue to grow and prosper, where Troy and Clarkston have basically stopped growing. I would strongly look into Lake Orion as a serious choice, the schools are great and it has a real community feel to it, unlike Troy and Rochester Hills where it is a bunch of sprawl. I'm not going to say that Troy is exactly "declining", but the city has been having some financial troubles these past few years and they have considered closing recreation centers and libraries. When you have children those are two things that you really want available and not to go away.

Good Luck on your home search!

Would you be willing to relocate out of Oakland County? If so, I'd recommend Grosse Pointe Woods. It has everything you seem to be looking for. You can get a 1,300 sq ft home with 1.5 bath and 3 bedrooms for $100,000. And thats basically all you need for you and your daughter. Plus, you can save bundles on insurance because of your ZIP code, and Grosse Pointe Schools is one of the few school districts that's doing well in Michigan, which would be great for your daughter. Also, it's the most diverse of all the Pointes. Not to mention the AMAZING commute to the well-paying businesses in Downtown Detroit.
