I would say that the Grand Rapids area definitely has a distinct conservative/religious vibe. If you are conservative but prefer large cities over rural areas, that would definitely be the place to go.

I must disagree, while some professors have had a golden paved road since birth, many come from rural roots and meager beginnings like a great deal of highly successfull people in the world today. I've met many profs who have combated all ods to maintain their positions, getting into graduate school is largely political. In my opinion, being able to maintain a focus that brings about a tenured PhD position is the ultimate example of "knowing what it takes to make it in the real world."

I'm a moved from Orange County CA to Newaygo County MI conservative. This area is pretty conservative.
