We know things are quite bad in MI. But we have family and church brethren there and have been away from them for several years. We are both near retirement so having a FT job will not be a serious problem in the long run. Can anyone recommend any small towns near Lansing but not in Lansing that are good choices and do have affordable rental housing. Thanks in advance.

You may want to look into Grand Ledge.

Grand Ledge is wonderful, DeWitt/Bath are nice. Mason and Holt are nice. What are you looking for in your small town?

Williamstown is another community that you can look at as well. Maybe Charlotte, Olivet, Eaton Rapids, and St. John's too.

Pretty much all of the towns listed here are nice! I live in Holt and am quite partial to it, and Mason is a darling town.

Btw, if you're interested in condos rather than apartments, I've noticed a ton of them for sale CHEAP. Apparently, the average selling time for one is 24 months around here, so you might be able to get a great deal on one.

Thanks for all your replies. Even though we are near retirement, we are in no position to buy anything. After renting for 25 years, we bought our first house in 2002 here in North Carolina. Six months later, I was laid off along with half of my department. Two years later we were able to sell the house at a slight profit, thankfully before the market started going downhill. Right now, we're renting a small house that the owner hasn't been able to sell. I have not worked much in the past 4 years and have had to rely on my poor wife who also wants to quit working soon.

Unless one is still working with a decent job or has a nice nest egg stashed away, buying any real estate now is a serious mistake. The market is still very, very weak and there will be millions more foreclosures coming down the pike, both residential and commercial.

Many of the towns everyone mentioned are on our list. BTW does anyone know of a good source of rental listings besides Craigslist and the Lansing Journal, such as a small weekly paper somewhere in greater Lansing?

Thanks again to everyone.

Yup, just about every town in your list has its own newspaper. (They're owned by the LSJ, but I believe the ads are specialized for that area.)

Grand Ledge is affordable, safe and you will find people there to be very friendly and welcoming.
