I just got through listening to an interview of him on Jim Rome's radio show from 2006. It was an absolute treat!

Mr. Harwell ranks up there with the best of the best regarding not only baseball broadcasters, but broadcasters in general. He was involved a great deal in various baseball documentaries, he had seen a lot in his years.

He will be missed. RIP, Mr. Harwell.

Growing up on a farm between Albion and Concord, in the middle of no where, I had my radio and
the fascinating voice of Ernie Harwell to keep me company. Thank you Ernie, God Bless you and Rest In Peace.

I was listening to sports talk on my way home from work tonight. They were taking calls asking what people thought would be a good way for the Tigers to honor Ernie Harwell. Some said a statue ( they already have one) some said play " that ball is looong gone" after every home run.

I thought it would be cool to put together a wall inside Comerica park with photo's spanning his career. Large black and whites nicely done etc and then they could have either a looped recording playing of his story and history along with some recordings of his most famous calls and catch phrases. Or they could set it up so that fan's can walk up and push a button to listen while they admire the Ernie Harwell wall of fame.

What do you think?

That voice. Instantly takes me back to summer nights with my Dad listening to the game on the radio. Sad.

Starrman69 - I grew up in Albion, used to go through Concord on the way to Swains lake to swim. Dairy Queen on the way home in Concord was huge treat (this was the early 60s)

My brothers and I spent the summer of the Tigers last WS listening to Ernie call the games. Every night in the garage with the radio on rebuilding a motor for my 68 Firebird. Nothing more Michigan than wrenching on a muscle car and Ernie calling a Tiger game

In the past Ive thought it kind of silly when people get emotional about a celebrity who passes. I understand a little better now

Ever swim at Dudeks Woods? We swam at Swains Lake as well. Our teacher at Bathmills School, (small one room schoolhouse down the road from the farm) Mrs. Railler's family used to own some of the property around Swain's Lake. The people that had the Dairy Queen (as I recall) were from Albion. After Bathmills, had to ride the bus to school in Albion 7-12. In '67 we moved into the new high school....
