My husband and I are from Holland, MI but have been away for a few years. With our first baby on the way, we began looking for jobs closer to home. He might have found a job with Conagra in Quincy. We don't know South Central MI very well, just enough to know that BC isn't on the top of our list. We thought maybe Marshall but some of the postings I've read make me think twice. I'm looking for insider info. Rural is ok but we don't want to be farmers. We both went to Western for our undergrad but, sadly, I think that is too far of a commute. Advice? Thanks ahead of time.

Default South-Central Michigan

How far does your husband want to commute? Coldwater is closer, quaint little city that I'd consider over Marshall (I've always thought that the house prices there were always too high). I've lived in Battle Creek, the Lakeview area (but BC has a city tax, 1% living in the city and a half pct. for working there, but not living in the city). Sturgis and Hillsdale could be other considerations. I always recommend that people find a nice rental and then looking around for the area that they'd prefer to live. Then you might find those other possibilities out in the country. There should be some nice lake front/area places as well. School systems would be another consideration.

I couldn't agree more about the school systems. I am a teacher and am really concerned that not knowing the area, I won't have the insider scoop. How are the Lakeview schools? My husband is willing to commute up to an hour. We would like to go in the Holland direction to make our frequent trips there a bit shorter.

Battle Creek Schools - Battle Creek Michigan School Ratings - Public and Private I've found this site, as a teacher you may have other resources to check the ratings that aren't on the internet.

As for Holland, we went every weekend. I always thought M-89 was better/faster/safer than I-94 to 131 to M-89...
