It sure does blow you away when you see it for the first time on a bright Summer day. These glacial lakes can be quite dramatic. I am always surprised that Torch has not developed it shoreline more than it has. I guess the remoteness to any large metro area makes all the difference. Lake Geneva is also a glacial lake, only turned the other way. They are always long and not so wide.

If you make the trip go all the way up to the Northern Lower Peninsula. You will not be sorry and go to Mackinaw Island it's beautiful! All along Lake Michigan is beautiful, try to see the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Little and Big Glen Lakes. Nice parks in Charlevoix and Petosky Amazingly beautiful!! Have fun and good luck.

I know that there have been lots of suggestions to this thread so far but, I will add one more. I grew up on Lake Huron on Michigan's north eastern side (the Sunrise Side) - here is my hometown's Chamber of Commerce website:

Tawas Area Chamber of Commerce

There is beautiful Tawas Bay and there are plenty of beaches......

Just my two cents.....Lake Michigan has gotten plenty of props but, I think Lake Huron deserves some attention, too.

Yes it does. Lake Huron is an awesome lake, with some great, uncrowded beaches. A sunrise over Lake Huron can be spectacular, and it is much less crowded tourist wise as well.

Actually, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are considered one in the same.If you do combine them they together form the largest fresh water body in the world. ( Not all consider then the same, it is debatable).

There are pretty strong environmental restrictions on building along Torch Lake, all controlled by the DEQ and the Torch Lake Association.

Torch Lake is friggin 293' deep at its deepest point! It's deeper than several of the other Great Lakes, I believe.
