Well guys, it's been over 9 years since I started this thread. I was feeling low -- stuck hundreds of miles away from my family yet again -- and seriously thinking about throwing in the towel. But I stuck it out. And now I'm weeks away from retirement. Was it worth it? I'd say yes. With the looming global recession, it's nice to know that no matter what happens, I have a guaranteed monthly check coming in for the rest of my life.
If you want to be away from your family for 20 years and possibly end up in a war zone, yes.
I am guessing you have no real experience, that is not reality. I did 30 years and my DW did 25, we had nowhere near that time away, the longest was about 6 months.

Your mileage may vary.
I can tell you that you'd be gone significantly more than that serving in the Navy in the current environment.
Basically in 2020, after 20 years of service a retired military gets 1/2 their base pay:
E6, Staff Sergeant, PO1, 20 years, monthly base $4,172, 20 year retirement, $2,086
E7, Sergeant First Class, CPO, 20 years, monthly base $5,597, 20 year retirement, $2,795
O4, Major, LT. CMDR, 20 years, monthly base $8,300, 20 year retirement, $4,150
O5, Colonel, CMDR, 20 years, monthly base $9,530, 20 year retirement, $4,765

I am no expert. Info came from online chart.
Looks good and it's inflation adjusted except that inflation adjustment looks like this:
E7 retired in 1998 a with 20 years service currently receiving $1888 - $123.42 (survivor benefit which provides 55% to spouse) = $1764.58.
Lost over 1/3 spending power to inflation after 22 years and DH still hoping to live another 22 years.

Yes I served in combat in Iraq in 07-08.
Family, as in home. Mother, father, brothers and sisters, don’t forget about family and friends. You must have been a POG desk jockey?
Don’t forget these people who retire almost always get VA disability they think they’re entitled to for doing 20 years regardless of their issues. It’s a screwed up system that needs revamped.

omg, really?
Are we going to start measuring our phallics now?
There are many of us who are not grunts.
